- Post how frequently you will check your
e-mail. Even consider designating specific times of specific days to
just checking e-mail. If you have multiple courses that utilize
Blackboard communication tools instead of one inbox, consider spliting these
times up per class.
- Don't feel pressured to check your
messages every day. In fact, some days, don't even go out to the
class! Instead, take a well deserved break. You've earned
it!
- Post when you will be out of town or away
from the computer for more than 48 hours. Create a thread on the
discussion board to allow for questions. Ask a fellow DE instructor or
Karen Liebhaber to field emergencies for you while you are gone.
- Require that all questions be posted to a
classroom discussion board. This procedure will ensure that you do
not receive multiple e-mails from students asking the same questions.
If students continue to post the same question, you will immediately know
they have not read the discussion board.
- Require that only personal messages be
sent to your e-mail. By requiring this, you are ensuring student
privacy yet preventing students from asking the same question over and
over. You will also be able to archive and retain one copy of all
student correspondence per class.
- Encourage students to answer questions on
the discussion board to which they know the answer. This will
relieve some of the pressure off of you while promoting student
retention. :-)
